I started my kickboxing journey with a very beat up, duct taped, old Wavemaster free standing bag that someone gave to me. I didn’t have to pay a dime for it, so it was exactly what I needed at the time. But once I started to put more time and energy into kickboxing, I realized I wanted something more solid with a little more resistance.
After considering many different punching bags I landed on this Free Standing Punching Bag (check price here) for my home gym. This bag is perfect for me because it’s reasonably priced in comparison to other bags, and it offers all of the features that I want in a punching bag. After using this bag several times a week for almost a year, it has held up really well and has turned out to be a really great purchase.
What I Love About This Bag
Adjustable Resistance:
One of the selling points for me on this bag was the fact that the resistance is adjustable. Since most free standing punching bags are built on a spring system, they are often very flexible and move pretty easily when kicked or punched.
This bag has removable springs that will allow the resistance to be adjusted. This is a great feature for someone who is sharing a punching bag with another person who is a different weight. It’s also nice to be able to remove the springs when you want to focus more on building your strength.
Solid Suction Cup Base:
Another thing I love about this bag is the suction cup base. My old punching bag always slid all across the garage floor when I trained.
This punching bag has 12 suction cups on the bottom of the base that hold it in place. On top of that, the hollow base can be filled with sand or water to make it even more stable.
I filled mine with two 50 pound bags of sand and the thing does not budge! And there’s room to put another bag of sand in to make it even heavier. No more readjusting my punching bag every five minutes!
So Quiet:
This punching bag is so much quieter than the last one I had. I always work out really early in the morning and I used worry about waking up the family. Not anymore! This bag is so incredibly quiet- even in an “echoey” garage. It has shock absorbers that actually absorb the vibrations and muffle the sound.
EASY to Assemble:
I really despise assembling things- something always goes wrong for me. But this punching bag was so easy to put together! The base and the bag are delivered separately. Once you receive both pieces, the only thing you have to do is fill the base and screw the base to the bag.
Quality and Comfort:
This bag has just the right amount of padding- not too soft, not to hard. It has also held up really well after almost daily use. I’m not sure if it would do as well outside, unless you keep it covered when you’re not using it.
Cons:
The only downside I found to this bag were the small fill hole in the base. The small fill hole is only a problem if you are using wet sand. In that case it will be very time consuming to get the sand in the base because you won’t be able to pour it in.
To avoid this problem you can get kiln dried sand, play sand, or just make sure the sand you have is very dry so that it pours easily and smoothly into the base.
Get this punching bag, you won’t regret it.
Seriously, this bag is awesome! You can definitely buy punching bags that are much more expensive, with leather coverings that will last forever. But after putting this bag to the test, I believe this bag is going to last a really long time, and has everything else the higher end bags have for a lot less money!
